International Conference on
"Biological Responses to Nanoscale Particles"

September 11-15, 2011 in Essen, Germany

Despite the numerous efforts in investigating the health effects of engineered nanoparticles (NPs), the interactions of NPs with the biological environment on the molecular and cellular scale are still one of the major challenges of science at the frontier between material sciences and biology. The current status of the fundamental aspects of nano-toxicology will be discussed at this international conference on "Bio-Nano Responses". The conference is organized by the Priority Programme (SPP1313) of Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE).

Contributions to the following topics are invited:

  • A. Interactions of NPs with biomolecules and membranes
  • B. Mechanisms of cellular uptake and intercellular trafficking
  • C. Biological impacts of NPs
  • D. Synthesis and characterization of NPs
  • E. In-vivo and in-vitro imaging and diagnostic techniques
  • F. Biodegradation of NPs
  • G. Life cycle analysis and risk assessment

  • Time and Location

The conference starts on Sunday, September 11, 2011 in the late afternoon and finishes at lunch time on Thursday, September 15, 2011. The venue will be at the University of Duisburg-Essen (www.uni-due.de) which is in the western part of Germany in the Ruhr area. Essen can easily be reached via Düsseldorf International Airport which is accessed by most international airlines. There is a direct train connection between Düsseldorf airport and Essen main station (approx. 30 min).

We expect participations from researchers active in any of the above fields. However, participations from members of industry and administration are also welcome. The total number of participants is limited to 180.

    Conference Fees

The conference fee is € 390,00 (regular participants) and € 260,00 (students). This includes the book of abstracts, all meals Sunday through Thursday, the reception and the conference dinner.

    Student Fellowships

A total number of 20 student fellowships will be made available upon request by the applicants and with an accompanying letter of recommendation by their supervisors. Applications should be addressed to the chairman of the programme committee, Reinhard Zellner.
